What is a phobia?

Phobias are an anxiety disorder involving an intense and irrational fear of a specific object or situation. Common phobias include fear of spiders, heights, enclosed spaces, and social situations. Phobias can be debilitating, causing significant distress and impairment in daily life. While traditional treatments for phobias, such as cognitive-behavioural therapy (CBT) and exposure therapy, can be effective, many patients find them to be difficult or unpleasant. Hypnotherapy offers an alternative that may be more comfortable and less invasive.

What is Hypnotherapy?

Hypnotherapy is a form of alternative therapy that has been gaining popularity in recent years although it has been used since its scientific history began in the latter part of the 18th Century with Franz Mesmer, a German physician who used it with his patients in Vienna and Paris. Hypnotherapy involves the use of hypnosis to induce a trance-like state in a client, during which a therapist can help the client access their subconscious mind and make positive changes to their thoughts, behaviours, and emotions. One area in which hypnotherapy has been shown to be particularly effective is in the treatment of phobias.

Case Study for Hypnohelpclinic

Meet Jo,

Jo was a 45 yr old client of mine with a needle phobia. His phobia had little impact on his daily life until the Covid pandemic arrived. As the news of a vaccine began to emerge, Jo felt his anxiety levels rise. Soon after the news that the nation would need a vaccine to travel, he became more anxious, scanning the news and looking for ways around having the vaccine.

Jo saw me for 3 sessions in total. The first was a full brain revision in which I explained to Jo exactly what was happening and why. He understood why his brain was reacting in this way and what our next steps would be. The second session was to perform the rewind technique where I used hypnosis to help Jo process his unpleasant memories regarding needles. Jo relaxed on a couch and was guided, by me into a deep relaxed state, which feels similar to the early stages of sleep where you're just drifting into sleep. Jo reported that he found the session relaxing. In the third and final session, Jo entered guided hypnosis again in which I put a new pleasant memory in his subconscious. This session he reported was extremely enjoyable and he left feeling very excited. One week later I received a picture of Jo receiving his Covid vaccination with a big smile on his face. This was a textbook case for me. However, there are times that a client may well believe that they have a phobia until it becomes apparent it is a more generalised anxiety disorder which takes a different approach. This usually happens after the first session or during the initial consultation.

Can any therapist provide this treatment?

While hypnotherapy for phobias is generally considered safe and effective, it is important to work with a qualified and experienced therapist. The therapist should have specialised training in hypnotherapy and be licensed or certified in their field. Always check their credentials. Most therapists will offer a free initial consultation, so you can ask lots of questions about exactly how they will approach your phobia.

In addition, clients should be aware that hypnotherapy is not a one-size-fits-all treatment. Each client is unique, and what works for one client may not work for another. It is important to work closely with the therapist to develop a treatment plan that is tailored to the individual client’s needs and preferences.

Is Hypnotherapy for me?

Hypnotherapy is a valuable tool in the treatment of phobias. It offers a safe, non-invasive, and potentially extremely effective alternative to traditional treatments. If you are struggling with a phobia and are interested in hypnotherapy, it is important to do your research and find a qualified therapist either via the National Council of Hypnotherapists or the Association of Solution-focused Hypnotherapists or lastly the Hypnotherapy directory. Therapists who belong to these bodies be regulated with qualifications, insurance and continuous professional development as well as being supervised regularly.
