First session Serotonin production tip

Updated: Feb 24, 2023

"So when you say positive action, does that mean I need to start running?" Jenny asked me. It was Jenny's first session in clinic and we were discussing how she would begin to start feeling a little better between sessions and move her way out of depression.

Not at all! quite the opposite in fact. When we do something we REALLY enjoy, rather than something we are supposed to embrace, we produce much more Serotonin. We all have heard of Serotonin, that wonderful neurotransmitter that helps us become brave, coping happy beings, but how do we make more of it?

Well one way is by doing something we love. Now, whether that's a walk in the countryside, a much needed mooch around the shops, a visit to somewhere new or simply getting into the garden, acting positively will create a lift and focus your attention on what you are doing, rather than past events that are making you feel low. This creates serotonin to flow and if you get to do your action with someone you love its a double whammy! This may seem a rather vague and unimportant part of your 'between sessions' list, but I assure you, if you do something you love during the day, which has been planned the day before and added to your 'What's been good list' at the end of the day you'll have produced Serotonin during the planning stage, during the execution stage and during the remembering stage. So, that's 3 times for one event!

So acting positively really is good for you and it comes in many shapes and sizes, so if your not a runner, only start if you want to! If that's too big a stretch, try walking with a friend in nature, or walking and listening to an audio book or podcast. Making the small changes to your life with consistency will catapult you to your goals before you know it.

As always, if you are struggling and you need help to get back on form, book a free initial consultation and get curious about your mental health.
